The contemporary sublime

The Big Bang. 175cm x 300cm. Sequins, pins and spray paint on cork and MDF. Office fan. 2011.
Locating and exploring the vestiges of romantic sensibilities in contemporary art and culture has been an ongoing concern in my work. Throughout my Masters (Camberwell 2010/11) I produced a body of material and written work that reframed notions of the postmodern or digital sublime through the lens of notions of futility and failure. I embarked on a self-consciously adolescent quest for sublime experience that led me to exploring the aesthetic of video games, pulp science fiction and fantasy (though minimalism and romantic painting), and ultimately to the Russian Mountains at Thorpe Park.
